Web Designer, Center for New Designs in Leadership & Scholarship (CNDLS) – Georgetown University

Georgetown’s Center for New Designs in Leadership & Scholarship (CNDLS) began with a mission to bridge a historic gulf between pedagogy and technological advances, and today CNDLS integrates a teaching and learning center with the latest educational technology. Our team of experienced educators facilitates a broad-based program that promotes discovery, engagement, and diversity in an ever- expanding conception of learning.

The Web Designer collaborates with project leads, designers, and developers to help drive principles of clear, elegant, accessible, creative, and responsive web design across the organization; and works hands-on as an individual contributor doing user visual design, experience (UX) research, and user interface (UI) design for the various web projects. By creating prototypes to quickly visualize, sketch, and communicate solutions to complex design problems, they play a crucial role in the iterative development of websites and media-rich applications. The Web Designer works closely with project leads, content managers, and other designers and developers on creative design, planning, and execution; and works with CNDLS leadership to ensure that the design ethos and approach are in alignment with the Center’s overall strategy. Reporting to the Senior Associate Director for Digital Learning and Development, the Web Designer has duties that include but are not limited to:

Web design

  • Conduct relevant stakeholder and user research to formulate good design concepts for projects
  • Create accessible and responsive web design concepts, and execute layout designs for websites, web applications, and online course templates based on feedback from the above group
  • Create wireframes, low-fidelity prototypes to quickly visualize, sketch, and communicate solutions to complex design problems for the web
  • Collaborate with project leads, content managers, designers and developers on designing user experience

Faculty Support and Community Engagement

  • Participate in consultations with faculty around good design principles for the web, including GU online courses and MOOCs
  • Create lo-fi prototypes for other relevant projects as identified by the CNDLS web team
  • Serve, together with a developer, as CNDLS liaison to University groups on web design standards

Collaboration, Design Workflow and Research

  • Work closely with respective stakeholders to establish good design practices
  • Work with developers to follow guidelines when designing websites
  • Take ownership of and document style guide and design patterns for CNDLS’ various web presences
  • Research new design approaches and share with colleagues to help CNDLS cultivate a leading-edge approach to its digital presence

Ad Hoc Responsibilities

  • Print design and other projects as assigned
  • Design, critique, and/or contribute to print design projects as needed
  • Contribute to print design

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in interaction design, visual design or a related field
  • At least 2 years of experience with interaction and visual design for web-based experiences and applications
  • Expert proficiency in the fundamentals of effective web design: typography, color, composition, rhythm, and responsiveness
  • Knowledge of web accessibility
  • Advanced knowledge of Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, XD, and InDesign)
  • Basic knowledge of atomic design and design patterns
  • Basic working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Working knowledge of Information Architecture.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

Preferred qualification

  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment
  • Openness to feedback
  • Familiarity with WordPress and Django
