Who we are

Lightning AI is the company reimagining the way AI is built. After creating and releasing PyTorch Lightning in 2019, Lightning AI was launched to reshape the development of artificial intelligence products for commercial and academic use.

Focusing on simplicity, sustainability, modularity, and extensibility, Lightning AI streamlines the lifecycle of machine learning development to expand widespread AI adoption. Its aim is to enable individual and enterprise users to build deployment-ready AI tools without having to hire experts or sink resources into in-house infrastructure.

Lightning AI is a remote-first company backed by $58.6 million in funding from Coatue, Index Ventures, Bain Capital Ventures, and Firstminute.

What’s important to us

We are building a company of people that care deeply about the impact of AI on our society. We value:

  • Integrity: AI is bound to change how we interact with computers, with each other, and the world—for the better. We are committed to building an inclusive company and developing ethical AI that improves humanity.
  • Perseverance: Be bold, take the initiative, and make decisions with confidence. We empower our community, clients, and colleagues to tackle the impossible.
  • Curiosity: We are genuinely interested in finding solutions to advance the state of AI research and foster its application in novel products. It's not about whether we can solve the problem, but how.

We also feel that it’s essential to point out the self-evident here – there’s a genuine lack of diversity in our industry, which has to change. One of our goals is to help drive that change. Lightning AI is fully committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion, and we embrace how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.

What we're looking for

We are looking for a Staff Product Designer to help us design groundbreaking technology that will transform the machine learning ecosystem and fundamentally change how the world experiences software. With a diverse skill set spanning product, interaction, and visual design, you are able to create products that are a joy to use and add tangible value to our users.

Reporting to the VP of Design & UX, you will collaborate across product and engineering to bring user flows and designs to life while working closely with users to test new ideas, conduct research, and gather feedback. You thrive in a fast-paced, start-up environment with a focus on speed, quality, and iteration from proof of concept to release.

What you’ll do

  • Drive the user experience, user interface, interaction, and visual design of individual features while advising on design strategy throughout the end-to-end product development process.
  • Craft user journeys, user flows, prototypes, and completed designs before handing them off to the engineering team for implementation.
  • Proactively identify design opportunities and drive continuous improvement based on business objectives, user requirements, and customer requests.
  • Discover creative ways to eliminate friction and reduce papercuts through design, making it easier for users to onboard and utilize our platform from day one.
  • Champion a design-first, user-centric approach with a focus on improving design quality and implementing structured, scalable design processes to increase productivity.

How we evaluate your candidacy

Our interviews will not only give us insight into your skillset, but give you insight into our company.

  • Recruiter Interview - 15 minutes: You will speak with our recruiter about your background and what you are looking for in your next role. We want to know why you are interested in joining us and what questions you have about the team.
  • Design Portfolio Review - 1 hour: This session will be broken down into two parts: 30 minutes to review your portfolio and 30 minutes to deep dive into 2 projects that you are most proud of. You will have the chance to both demonstrate the breadth of your work and dig into the design problem, role, metrics, and designs with a display of the iterations and final deliverables.
  • Virtual Onsite - 2 hours and 45 minutes: You'll have the opportunity to meet with our Marketing and Design team for 30-45 minutes each and work through an app critique and design problem-solving challenge. You will also meet our CEO, William Falcon, to chat about your background, what you’ve learned, and why you’d like to work with us.
    • App Critique Interview - 45 minutes: To prepare for this interview, you will need to select an application to critique. While we don’t have specific criteria for the selection, we highly recommend selecting a developer tool or SaaS platform. You will speak to the pros and cons of all design areas, including product strategy, content strategy, visual, interaction, motion, and branding. We want you to demonstrate high and low-level thinking from company objectives to typography choices.
    • Problem Solving Interview - 45 minutes: This will be a whiteboard exercise to showcase your design process and how to infuse creativity and innovation into everyday problem solving.
    • Culture Interview - 45 minutes: In this role, you will work with people across all teams, including engineering, design, sales, and marketing. We want to talk about how you build bridges, secure buy-in, and champion seamless communication and collaboration.
  • Offer: We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on geo-located salary bands updated on a monthly basis using Carta's Total Compensation tool. During the presentation call, we will review the base salary, benefits, number of options, notional option value, and strike price. We would like to know if you accept our offer within 7 days.
    • As of 10/6/22, if we hire you in New York City, your base salary would fall within the bands below. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of your offer is not included in these numbers and represents a significant part of your total compensation.
      • Senior Product Designer, IC5 $125,000 - $187,000 base
