Senior UX/UI Designer

The primary responsibility of the position is to understand the needs of the end user and to create UI designs that will improve the quality of the human- computer experience with NBME systems. This position shares and collaborates with stakeholders on UI designs and user experiences and refines based on feedback. The person in this role will lead the UX design strategy and own the UX UI processes for NBME staff in addition to being a member of one or more agile scrum teams that are responsible for software applications used to deliver NBME's products and services. The ideal candidate will be an energetic, detail oriented, and experienced UI/UX Designer, with good communication and presentation skills and who can work effectively on one or more teams.

This role has been designated as primarily remote which means it generally does not require onsite work more than an average of 2-3 times per month and may require additional prescheduled onsite work. We're open to considering candidates in the following states: PA, NJ, DE and MD.

  • Develops and communicates the UX strategy for NBME. Proposes, designs, and trains on improvements to NBME's enterprise wide UX UI processes and standards. Advises NBME leadership on changes needed to advance UX strategy. Works with Enterprise Architecture on UX UI tool selection, configuration, and training.
  • Uses research, design thinking, creative problem solving, and understanding of the full-picture to design and produce artifacts with varying fidelity such as wireframes, prototypes, visual design specifications, style guides, pattern libraries, and entire workflows for apps and websites that are on-brand, visually consistent, and aesthetically appealing.
  • Creates personas, UI designs. Defines information architecture.
  • Applies design techniques including prototyping, user evaluations, and usability tests.
  • Proactively addresses accessibility issues and provides guidance in conformance to WCAG standards
  • Uses design analytics such as web analytics, survey results, usability testing, and A/B testing results to improve design. Analyzes usage data to learn what matters most to users and proposes improvements to technical product owners and their stakeholders.
  • Actively participates in the definition, documentation, and analysis of user stories in an agile environment. Estimates design effort in story points for user stories.
  • Explains UI designs to developers, negotiates compromises of design based on cost and feasibility with engineers and stakeholders
  • Plans and facilitates UX sessions and focus groups
  • Contributes to library of reusable design components
  • Maintains and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge in industry best practices
  • Mentors and provides valuable technical UX and UI guidance to developers and other UX UI Designers


Skills and Abilities

  • Wireframing and prototyping including experience with Figma, Sketch, and other wireframing and prototyping tools
  • Visual communication and design, typography, and interaction design skills
  • Product usability monitoring
  • HTML and CSS knowledge
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and conformance tools such as WAVE
  • Good communication, organization, and collaboration skills, a detail-oriented attitude and ability to work effectively on a team
  • Can effectively communicate complex solutions and options with both technical and non-technical staff.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and techniques quickly and independently
  • Experience working with cloud environment like AWS and Salesforce a plus
