The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (“NHMLAC”) was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 108 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHM at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and Museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall—is looking forward to new building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach, and innovative audience engagement.

Reporting to the Creative Director, the Lead UX/UI Designer is responsible for creating insight-driven strategies for the digital properties, including museum websites (,,,, microsites and web applications, from initial research to brainstorming, wireframing, design, and production.

The Lead UX/UI Designer will work closely with the Creative Services, Marketing, and Digital Strategies teams to ensure fidelity to user and institutional goals. As the steward of the branded website experience, they will look for opportunities for improvement and continuous enhancements.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversees the NHMLAC suite of websites and is responsible for designing, implementing and updating the overall layout and aesthetic for the website;
  • Create research-driven, user-centered designs for products ranging from Museum websites, intranets, micro-sites, web applications, mobile and tablet applications.
  • Designing the UX/UI components and testing them directly with designers and key team members to validate designs;
  • Maintenance of existing web pages and creation of web graphics;
  • Working in conjunction with Marketing, incorporate user research to ensure the end users’ voice is incorporated into the design process
  • Creating wireframes, storyboards and sitemaps;
  • Assist with content development: helping to make image and graphic recommendations and being aware of brand integrity and vision;

This position has the following requirements:

  • 6+ years of experience in web strategy and/or user experience roles, preferably with a digital agency or institutional background;
  • Broad strategic experience and skills across information architecture and interaction design, processes surrounding the user experience, workflows, brand strategy and positioning;
  • A solid understanding of graphic design principles and digital software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and of wireframing tools such as Figma and Sketch;
  • Deep knowledge of Drupal and basic understanding of HTML, CSS frameworks such as Tailwind.css and JavaScript frameworks such as React/Next.js;
  • Knowledge of new directions in web architecture, responsive design, language and tools, and of best practices for web;
  • Excellent organization and communication/facilitation skills, attention to detail, and the ability to clearly and concisely articulate complex concepts for a variety of audiences;
  • Ability to solve challenges creatively, strategically and collaboratively;
  • Understanding of user testing methodologies/tools and Google Analytics ;
  • Comfortable collaborating with content creators, graphic designers and web developers.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Design or related discipline.

The NHMLAC is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment to working with a diverse community. Salary range for this position is $76,000.00 - $82,000.00 with experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full-time regular, exempt position.
