Basic Purpose

Assist in the development and execution of the accounting policy function and ensure alignment with Navy Federal’s overall goals, strategies, mission and vision. Work directly with the AVP Accounting Policy, leadership in Finance, and stakeholders across the enterprise to:

  • Produce the appropriate accounting assessments and recommendations associated with business initiatives related to products, services, and transactions
  • Monitor and communicate emerging or changing accounting and regulatory standards
  • Assist in representing Navy Federal externally on accounting related matters
  • Develop and maintain an accounting policy handbook for broad consumption
  • Direct report to the AVP –Accounting Policy

Responsibilities:

  • Remain informed of current and proposed accounting standards/practices and regulations and assess the preliminary impact on the organization
  • Lead the identification of issues requiring research of technical accounting literature and document related accounting positions
  • Partner with business unit leaders to provide accounting analysis and recommendations in connection with new/changing products, services, and transactions
  • Communicate and present accounting conclusions in an executive manner for consumption by senior leadership and other internal stakeholders
  • Lead the documentation of accounting conclusions in formal technical accounting memos and work with external auditors to support accounting positions, as needed
  • Assist in compiling periodic training to finance and accounting teams on new and emerging accounting and regulatory standards
  • Compile, analyze and summarize information required for senior leaders to make accounting policy elections and decisions in a timely manner
  • Coordinate the compilation of existing documentation and develop new documentation as required to formulate an accounting policy handbook for broad consumption
  • Render assistance in representing the organization externally on matters affiliated with accounting policies by taking active part in industry¿wide relationships and associated organizational meetings
  • Contribute to a culture of horizontal collaboration by actively working across business units and sharing knowledge
  • Lead and manage a high functioning, highly engaged and motivated team
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
  • Experience in accounting/finance leadership experience, preferably with a Big 4 public accounting firm and/or in a publicly traded banking or financial services environment
  • Certified Public Accountant designation
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and financial industry regulations (i.e. NCUA, OCC, FDIC)
  • Extensive experience accounting for loans, securities, derivatives, and other complex financial instruments
  • Advanced skill in communicating complex accounting concepts to non¿accountant business leaders
  • Experience managing and leading high performing and engaged teams
  • Ability to build relationships with executive management, internal, and external stakeholders
  • Advanced skill demonstrating thought leadership in providing vision & strategic thinking
  • Effective leadership, delegation, coaching, and mentoring skills and the ability to make sound long and short term business decisions
  • Advanced experience in managing cross¿functional, multi¿dimensional teams and projects of the highest complexity which have business risk and impact
  • Advanced experience in identifying relevant analytical problems, determining appropriate diagnostic methods and solving unique and complex issues/problems

Desired Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Finance or a related field, or the equivalent combination of training, education and experience
  • Database technological skills – Access, SQL, Hadoop
  • Experience with credit union financials and/or NCUA regulations.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Location: 820 Follin Lane, Vienna VA 22180 or full time remote (relocation assitance provided on a case by case basis)

External Salary Range: $92,900 – $160,400
